'Osama bin Laden' is the latest surprise spectator to turn up in a 'crowd' during the Covid-19 pandemic, with Leeds United forced to remove a cut out of the former al-Qaeda leader.

It's become a cliche to talk about the fact that football isn't the same without fans in the ground right now and clubs have tried different ways to combat how it looks in the stadium without them.

Leeds United are the latest club to use cardboard cutouts of the fans in the ground, with fans paying the privilege for their paper selves to be in the stands.

The Championship side hit a snag on Wednesday when it was noticed that Bin Laden was sat amongst the rest of the more regular fans.

According to BBC sports reporter Adam Pope the club have since removed the cutout and will make sure that no other offensive images are being used.

It's not the first time that someone unexpected has turned up in the crowd in board form. Government aid dominic Cummings was spotted in Australia in an NRL crowd.

It's not known whether or not his wife and son were also at the match and whether he was there to check his eyesight.

Donald Trump and Gary Lineker were reportedly spotted at Cheltenham Town's loss in the League Two play-offs earlier this week, whilst Shaquille O'Neal was in the Northampton Town crowd, but he does support the club and his appearance was on purpose.

Bin Laden wouldn't have been likely to be in the home crowd at Elland Road even before his death in 2011 as he was thought to be an Arsenal fan, having followed the club since studying in England in the 1970s.

Leeds' next game is against Fulham on Saturday and, having lost to Cardiff City last weekend, they'll be desperate to avoid defeat.

A win for the Cottagers would reduce the gap with their hosts to just four points in the race for automatic promotion. Three points for Leeds would take their lead to 10 points and all but secure their return to the top tier.
