Barcelona midfielder Arda Turan has been given a suspended two years and eight month jail sentence for carrying, and firing, an unlicensed firearm in a hospital.

Turan is currently on loan at Turkish side Istanbul Basaksehir and was charged in October last year for a fight with singer Berkay Sahin, leaving the musician with a broken nose.

The midfielder then arrived at a hospital later with a gun, which he isn't licensed to carry, and let the firearm off at the hospital, causing 'panic.'

A Turkish court gave him a suspended jail sentence of two years and eight months, meaning he can't be on the wrong side of the law for the next five years.

Basaksehir fined the player £350,648 for the incident when it happened.

The 32-year-old was announced as signing for Barcelona in the summer of 2015 but had to wait till January 2016 to be registered with the club because of their transfer embargo.

He featured 18 times in La Liga from January until the end of the season and the same amount of times in the following season, helping to win the Copa del Rey.

In the 2017/18 season he failed to make a single appearance and left in January last year to join Basaksehir on loan for the rest of the season and the next two years.

The Turkish international, who previously retired from national duty after an altercation with a journalist on a plane before returning, has had his fair share of controversy.

In May 2018 he was sent off for his current loan club for pushing an assistant referee and given a 16 game ban, the longest in Turkish football history, before it was lowered to 10 games on appeal.

According to Spanish newspaper Marca many in Turkey think that the punishment is very lenient, especially when compared to those handed out for 'political opinion.'

Turan had also been accused of harassment, to go along with causing intentional injuries and illegal possession of a weapon, but was acquitted of the third complaint.

Basaksehir finished second in Super Lig last season, after leading for much of the season, missing out on the title by three points to Galatasaray after one win in their final five matches.

Their form hasn't improved this season and they currently sit in 14th position after one win and two losses in the opening three games of the season.
