Former Arsenal Player Has Contract Terminated With Two Years Remaining

Former Arsenal Player Has Contract Terminated With Two Years Remaining

Lucas Perez, once bought by Arsenal for £17m, has seen his time with Deportivo Alavez come to an abrupt end.

Former Arsenal and West Ham United striker Lucas Perez has mutually agreed to terminate his contract at Spanish club Deportivo Alavez after two seasons.

The 32-year-old who scored 15 goals in 62 appearances at the Estadio Mendizorroza since joining from West Ham had two years remaining on his deal at the La Liga side.

In an official statement on the club's website, Deportivo Alavez explained the decision.

"Deportivo Alaves and Lucas Perez have reached an agreement for the separation of the Galician player, who leaves the Paseo de Cervantes entity after two seasons. We thank Lucas for his commitment and involvement in achieving the goals set by the team and we wish him the best of luck in his future."

Perez rose to prominence after spells for Athletico Madrid C and Rayo Vallecano B before spells in Ukraine and Greece. Having returned to Spain he scored 24 goals at Deportivo La Caruña across two seasons before getting his move to the Premier League.

Upon signing for Arsenal, after the player was strongly tipped to sign for Everton in the summer of 2016, Arsene Wenger spoke of his qualities.

""He's not only a goalscorer, he's a guy who combines well with partners, who can give a final ball and makes good runs."

As it turned out, Perez only scored once in 11 games for The Gunners, returning to Deportivo La Caruña for a successful loan before returning to the Premier League with West Ham were he scored three times in 15 games.

The destination of his next club is unknown but Perez will be hoping for a swan song to what has been a stop-start career so far.
