Gary Lineker and Jamie Carragher were involved in a heated argument on Twitter today after the Match of the Day presenter pointed out a mistake on last night's 'Monday Night Football'.

During a debate about Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, a graphic was shown on screen detailing both footballers' achievements and silverware. However, it didn't show Messi's triumph in the Copa América earlier this year and missed out the 4th of the Argentinian's Champions League successes, much to Lineker's frustration.

"To be fair it's such a long time since Messi led Argentina to victory in Copa América, they're entitled to forget it," the former England international tweeted last night. "Also 4 Champions Leagues, not 3."

However, Sky Sports' Carragher wasn't having any of Lineker's comments and was quick to respond this morning.

"We made a mistake on a graphic over Messi's international honours," the Liverpool legend explained. "It happens a lot on MOTD (Match of the Day). Check Messi's record in 2006 in the CL, he didn't play 1 min after 1st KO round, so we counted it as 3.

We don't have autocue on MNF so I'm sure you'd also make a mistake now and again."

Lineker responded almost instantly, criticising the show for not highlighting and apologising for the mistake.

"Yes we do, and when they happen, they're quite rightly pointed out," he replied.

It was after this comment that the spat really started to heat up.

"Not by anyone on MNF, as we realise it's not easy," Carragher snapped. "I know you spend the majority of your time on Twitter but just look after MOTD & we'll do the same on MNF. If you ever want to come on with no autocue you're welcome."

"You seem to be picking fights with everybody these days," ex-Evertonian Lineker fired back. "I hope you're alright, Jamie."

Carragher countered Lineker's jab by saying he was 'just sticking up for our stats guy', to which Lineker tweeted 'good man' along with a thumbs up emoji.

This is not the first time that Carragher has been involved in online 'beef'. Earlier this summer, he and his former England teammate engaged in a war of words over Harry Kane's future and four years ago, he and former Leicester City defender Danny Simpson had a tussle on Twitter which both admitted became too 'personal'.

Despite their row, Lineker and Carragher are considered by many to be two of the best in sports broadcasting. Whilst the former has presented Match of the Day for over 20 years, the latter has been a part of Sky Sports' punditry team since 2013.Featured Image Credit:
