Mohamed Salah has missed out on the shortlist for UEFA's Champions League player of the season award despite his key role in Liverpool's sixth European Cup triumph.

The Egyptian forward netted the opening goal in their 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in last seasons final at the Wanda Metropolitano, but it's fellow attacker Sadio Mane who's clinched a spot.

Four more of Salah's teammates are also up for positional awards.

Sadio Mane's competition is stiff, with the Senegalese up against Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi for the crown.

Alisson Becker is shortlisted for best goalkeeper, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk are nominated for best defender while Reds skipper Jordan Henderson is nominated for the best midfielder.

Runner-ups Spurs have players featured in the shortlists too, with captain Hugo Lloris challenging Alisson for best keeper while Christian Eriksen finds himself up for the midfield spot.

In the Europa League, Olivier Giroud features as well as former Chelsea teammate Eden Hazard who's now at Real Madrid.

Per the official UEFA website,

"The jury comprised the coaches of the 32 clubs that participated in the group stage of the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League, together with 55 journalists from each of UEFA's 55 member associations, and selected by the European Sports Media (ESM) group. Coaches were not allowed to vote for players from their own teams.

"Both coaches and journalists were requested to select a shortlist of three players in each category by allocating respectively five points, three points and one point to each of them. The final result was based on the total number of votes cast by the coaches and the journalists."

Winners will be announced on August 29 in Monaco.
