Jamie Carragher has revealed that he knew Luis Suarez was cut from a different cloth when the Uruguay international first kicked him in training.

The attacker was at Liverpool for three years following a January transfer move from Ajax, and became fan favourite after he helped the Reds come close to a Premier League title. He scored 82 goals in the 133 matches he played for the Merseyside club.

He was sold to Barcelona in 2014, the same year in which he was banned from playing for nine internationals, all of football for four months and also fined 100,000 Swiss francs.

But when it was channelled correctly, Carragher believes the 31-year-old had just the right temperament.

In his Telegraph column, the former Liverpool defender said: "He kicked me in a training session at Melwood. 'This fella is a bit different,' I thought. I loved it. Then I kicked him back!"

Carragher then went on to pay his former teammate a huge compliment:

"His skill was obvious - Suarez is the best Liverpool signing I played with - but the most instantly reassuring quality was how he approached every game the same, whether behind closed doors or in front of 45,000 at Anfield.

"Not all players do this. They hold back until match-day."

Suarez is currently in Russia for the World Cup. His side will face off against Portugal in the Round of 16 - and Carragher believes with Suarez in the side, Uruguay are contenders for winning the World Cup:

"At international level, Suarez has elevated Uruguay to the point where they are genuine contenders for this World Cup, and he may yet emerge in the knockout stages to challenge for the Golden Boot.

"When we talk about Suarez, we are undoubtedly discussing one of the greatest modern players."
