What Benatia Has Said About The Madrid Penalty Is The Best Reaction Yet

A brutally honest opinion...

Despite all the talk around Gianluigi Buffon, the man at the centre of the action in last nights Champions League tie was Medhi Benatia, it was he who conceded the crucial penalty that cost Juventus the game.

The moment was huge. Michael Oliver had a split second to decide, his options were in essence simple. Play on and ignore a 80,011 people screaming for a penalty or deny a true legend of the game in Buffon his final swan song.

Not a position any of us would like to be in.

Oliver in the end went with penalty and now the man who conceded it has given his side of the story.

"I slightly pushed and made contact with Vazquez in the back but hoped he wouldn't go down," Said Benatia. "In the end if that happened to one of us then we'd also be screaming for a penalty. Football is like this sometimes."

A diplomatic response and perhaps a more reasoned one than that of Buffon, who was furious after the final whistle. Speaking about Oliver after the game, he said:

"Clearly you cannot have a heart in your chest, but a bag of rubbish. On top of that, if you don't have the character to walk on a pitch like this in a stadium like this, you can sit in the stands with your wife, your kids, having your drink and eating crisps.

Despite the fact that we have probably seen the last of Buffon outside of Serie A, now could be a good time to reflect on the career of one of the great players on the modern era. 870 games and 393 clean sheets across 77,955 minutes of football. What a legend!

Real Madrid by hook or by crook are now through to the semi-final of the Champions League and will face one of either AS Roma, Bayern Munich or Liverpool in the next stage of Europe's biggest competition.

Of course, fans on Twitter had their say over the incident...
