Wayne Rooney did not hesitate when asked football's most important and frequently asked question: "Who's the greatest: Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi?"

Now living it up in America, playing for DC United, Rooney has been on media duties in the States.

In this instance, he was talking in a filmed podcast by Barstool Sports - an American sports-based talk show, where Rooney was asked the famous - if not overused - question of who is the greatest out of the two titans.

Without a moment's thought, Rooney replied: "Messi."

"They're probably the best two players to ever play the game and I just think Messi is, in my eyes, the greatest ever."

The whole clip is available to view below.

Rooney and Ronaldo were part of Sir Alex Ferguson's second golden generation, the team that won the Champions League in 2008.

But there was that famous falling out the pair had back in the 2006 World Cup, when Portugal faced off against England in quarter-final, and Ronaldo appeared to wink at a teammate after Rooney was sent off.

But, via The Telegraph, Rooney actually said that Ronaldo's antics that day got him off the hook:

"I didn't really get any stick. Ronaldo took a lot of it and I was pleased about that.

"I still got it when I played for my club but that is just normal. In that instance, I know I could have taken a lot more."

Rooney and Ronaldo made up and so his recent comments should be fair and balanced. It's not like he threw his former teammate under the bus, he actually calls him the second best player to ever exist - hardly an insult.
