A match between Altos and Nacional-AM in the Brazilian Serie D league had to be halted for six minutes because a swarm of wasps attacked players.
Spectators and players were surprised as a swarm of stingers invaded the middle of the field. To protect themselves, everyone in attendance lied down to avoid injury, the game having to be stopped for six minutes before play continued.
Players, referees and assistants lay on the pitch to escape the furious attack by the 'Marimbondos' - a name given to a special kind of wasp found only in Brazil.

Klenisson, a player who was in the midst of the attack, said that he was hurt on the ear by the flying insect.
The match was only 26 minutes into the first half when the attacked from the insect ensured.
The lying-down strategy used by the players to escape the insects was also used by the São Paulo referee Adriano de Assis Miranda. The referee recorded the bizarre incident in his notepad, along with the goals and cards that occurred during the match.

He said: (roughly translated) "During a stoppage for a water break, there was an invasion of Marimbondos in the field. We had to protect to ourselves, the athletes and equipment of arbitration."
