UEFA have released their top ten list for Player of the Year, following the announcement that Luka Modric won the award overall, and not many people are happy with UEFA's decision. They feel that Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi should've won it.
Here are UEFA's top ten.
1 Luka Modrić (Real Madrid & Croatia) - 313 points
2 Cristiano Ronaldo (Juventus/Real Madrid & Portugal) - 223 points
3 Mohamed Salah (Liverpool & Egypt) - 134 points
4 Antoine Griezmann (Atlético & France) - 72 points
5 Lionel Messi (Barcelona & Argentina) - 55 points
6 Kylian Mbappé (Paris & France) - 43 points
7 Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City & Belgium) - 28 points
8 Raphaël Varane (Real Madrid & France) - 23 points
9 Eden Hazard (Chelsea & Belgium) - 15 points
10 Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid & Spain) - 12 points
Luka Modric named UEFA Men's Player of the Year and he thoroughly deserves it. Consistently brilliant, a beacon of quality in a Real Madrid midfield that has dominated Europe's top table for 3 straight seasons.- Sam Tighe (@stighefootball) August 30, 2018
But some didn't agree with UEFA's choice
Fabio Cannavaro winning Ballon d'Or 2006 was it. He had an average season, followed by a spectacular World Cup campaign in the post-season.- Juventinomics (@JuveCharts) August 30, 2018
If Ronaldo had stayed at Madrid he would have definitely won it but since he is not at Madrid so modric won it..- ----- (@Zaheerk07) August 30, 2018
I'm shocked Modric won the UEFA Player Of The Year award ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo.- Deji Faremi (@deejayfaremi) August 30, 2018
Firstly, I think Kroos was even the better Real Madrid midfielder in the UCL.
Secondly, Cristiano Ronaldo scored in 10/13 games for the winners. That's sick.
I honestly don't know how UEFA arrived at Luca Modric as its player of the year. However CR7's decision not to show up for the ceremony was disrespectful. #BetwayDaily.- Charles Anazodo (@chaplinez70) August 31, 2018
This is following a season where Real Madrid won the Champions League and France won the World Cup. Modric helped his nation Croatia reach their best ever finish in the World Cup. They finished runners-up, losing to France in a thrilling final in Russia.
The UEFA Player of the Year is the veteran midfielder's second major individual award in two months, after he earned the Golden Ball at this summer's World Cup - a competition where he had brilliant campaign.
Ever since the departure of Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane from Real Madrid, many consider Modric to be the most important player on the team.
But he's been linked with a move to Inter Milan this summer. The Italian giants are back in the Champions League after several seasons out, and have attracted the interest of some big names over the window.
