Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp recently insisted the club cannot match the spending of sides like Chelsea and Manchester City - with a chart proving exactly that.

Chelsea have signed six players this summer while City were linked with a mammoth move for Lionel Messi earlier in the window.

Klopp recently told BBC Five Live that The Reds couldn't compete with clubs "owned by countries and oilgarchs.

A Sky Sports graphic has done the rounds and shown Liverpool are the lowest spenders of the top six in the last four transfer windows.

Liverpool's transfer spend sits at £23 million, which is £150 million less than Arsenal in fifth place.

At the top sits Chelsea after their splurge this summer, which includes a £71 million deal for Kai Havertz and £50 million transfer for Ben Chilwell.

Blues boss Frank Lampard fired back at Klopp's comments prior to their season opener against Brighton & Hove Albion on Monday.

"The reality is - other than maybe Leicester, which was an incredible story - most clubs that win the League in the modern day have recruited well and have recruited at quite a high level money-wise," the former England international begun.

"You can go through the Liverpool players - [Virgil] Van Dijk, Alisson, Fabinho, [Naby] Keita, [Sadio] Mane, [Mohamed] Salah. Incredible players that came at a very high price. Liverpool have done it over a period of time.

"What we have done is come off the back of a ban and probably try to address the situation to help improve us. We know that Liverpool have spent at a high level.

"We know they have an incredible coach. We know they have incredible players. The really smart thing Liverpool have done is believe in their coach and believe in their system for a number of years. It's a great story but it's a story where they've spent money on players."

Liverpool's big spending came to a stop after signing Alisson in 2018.

Since then the Premier League champions have signed Sepp van den Berg, Harvey Elliott, Adrian, Andy Lonergan, Takumi Minamino and Konstantinos Tsimikas.

Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago is on their radar but a bid has yet to materialise.
