"Liverpool are the best team in the world at the moment, and when you're linked with that team it makes me very proud," the 23-year-old told Viasport.

Werner has scored 26 goals in 32 games for Leipzig this season and is second in the Bundesliga scoring charts behind Robert Lewandowski.

Despite his phenomenal season, the forward is remaining humble and admitted he's have to improve to get into Liverpool's side.

"It's a pleasure but I know Liverpool play a lot of good players and I have to improve myself and to learn much more things to get on this level to play there."

Klopp has reportedly been interested in adding Werner to his front line for a while.

The Premier League leaders are interested in strengthening their attack and obtaining cover for Roberto Firmino.

Christian Falk of German outlet BILD recently revealed the German international has a release clause in his contract that expires in May.

The buyout clause it reportedly between the region of €55m (£46.1m) and €60m (£50.3m).

Werner impressed as Leipzig frustrated Jose Mourinho's side at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Julian Nagelsmann's side could have taken the lead inside the first two minutes as Angelino smashed a shot against the post.

Hugo Lloris also made a key stop from Werner to keep the scores level.

However, Werner wouldn't be denied in the second half as coolly dispatched a penalty after Ben Davies brought down Konrad Laimer with a late challenge.

Spurs rallied in the second half but failed to break down a resilient Leipzig.
