Manchester United Have £40 Million Transfer Bid For Real Madrid Superstar Rejected

Manchester United have reportedly had their £40 million bid for Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane turned down by the Spanish giants.

The French World Cup winner is believed to be on his way out of the Santiago Bernabeu this summer, as Varane is out of contract in 2022 and apparently has no plans to sign a new contract.

That means Real Madrid can either sell the 28-year-old or risk him walking away for nothing next year. Man United have long been linked to Varane - as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants a top-class centre-back to partner Harry Maguire - but, according to Spanish outlet AS, United's first bid has been disregarded as "insufficient".

Real Madrid are believed to value the defender at €70 million (around £60 million), while United's bid was reportedly in the region of €45 million (or £40 million).

This does not mean the deal is dead in the water, of course. Varane is said to favour a move to Old Trafford as he "wants a new challenge" (according to AS), while Real Madrid look set to sign versatile defender David Alaba after he leaves Bayern Munich, so Varane could be a player they can afford to lose.

Real also urgently need funds and Manchester United are one of the few clubs in Europe with the finances to make such a signing in 2021. They have also been linked with the player for so long that it's clear there's admiration for Varane from inside the club.

Doubts persist over the suitability of Victor Lindelof or Eric Bailly to partner Maguire. And the club captain's recent injury - and United subsequent shipping of four goals against Liverpool - have shown how crucial a quality addition to the Red Devils' backline is.

Varane, a four-time Champions League winner during his 10-year spell at Real, also boasts 75 caps for France. Having just turned 28 in April, he would seem to be the perfect mix of experience and with plenty of his peak years still ahead of him.

He missed both of Real Madrid's Champions League semi-final games against Chelsea with a thigh injury, but has a good fitness record overall, having played at least 40 games in each of the last four seasons (including this one).

United may have failed with their first bid - and there are other admirers out there, with Chelsea believed to be among them - but we wouldn't be surprised if this is just the start of the negotiations as Solskjaer looks to add Varane to his squad this year.
