Manchester United are reportedly looking to plug their leaky defence by signing Brighton star Ben White in the January transfer window.

United have already conceded 17 goals in just 10 Premier League games this season, with Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof looking far from their best.

As a result, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is said to have identified White as the man to steady the ship.

The 23-year-old has impressed in his debut season in the top flight, starting all 11 Premier League games for the Seagulls, and the Red Devils could swoop next month, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Technically sound and adept at bringing the ball out from the back, White, who joined Brighton from Southampton at the age of 16, spent last season on loan at Leeds.

He was ever-present in the Championship last term, with a string of accomplished displays at the heart of defence helping Leeds claim the title and earning him the club's Young Player of the Season award.

Leeds tried to sign him permanently in the summer but a £25m bid was rejected and he signed a new four-year deal at the Amex Stadium.

Chelsea, Tottenham and Liverpool have also been linked with White, but Seagulls boss Graham Potter expects his man to remain focused.

"I have no worries about Ben getting his head turned at all," said Potter. "He's a level-headed guy that wants to play football.

"Of course, he wants to play football at the highest level, just like you want all your players to have those ambitions.

"But he gets his head down and gets on with his work and he was totally professional in summer, despite the noise from outside which you can't control.

"He's a smart guy and we'll just carry on getting on with our work and try to help him enjoy his football, which is the most important thing."

Other names in the defensive frame for United include Real Madrid's Raphael Varane and RB Leipzig's Dayot Upamecano.
