Timo Werner Ranks Fourth In Premier League ‘Big Chances Missed’ This Season

Chelsea's big-money striker has been unable to find the net in his last 12 games.

Timo Werner is enduring a tough start to his Chelsea career, evidenced by the fact the German international striker is riding high in the Premier League's 'big chances missed' this season.

Werner, who left RB Leipzig when Chelsea activated his £47.5 million release clause last year, actually made a bright start to his career in England and racked up eight early goals for the Blues.

But Werner, who scored 34 goals for Leipzig last season, has now gone 12 games without scoring as Frank Lampard's side have struggled.

He also banged his knee during the simple act of taking a corner in Chelsea's miserable 3-1 defeat at home to Manchester City on Sunday. A sign of how badly things have been going wrong.

Werner's scoreless run has been punctuated by a series of glaring misses, such as against Leeds in December when he somehow steered Olivier Giroud's goal-bound header away from the net. Oh dear.

According to Premier League data crunched by GiveMeSport, Werner has missed eight 'big chances' in 17 league games this season. Those eight misses being twice as many as the four Premier League goals he's scored.

But it isn't all bad news for the 24-year-old. For a start, three players sit above him in the top-10 ranking - and also he's in some pretty good company alongside some of the Prem's best.

He's level on eight misses with Everton's Dominic Calvert-Lewin - who's scored an impressive 11 league goals this season. And, as any ex-striker will tell you, the time to worry is when you aren't getting any chances at all.

Missing notable chances can be remedied by sharpening your finishing but at least Werner is getting himself in some good positions. Even if his conversion ratio is far below what you'd expect for a player who looked so sharp in the Bundesliga.

For example, Patrick Bamford is joint top of the table with 12 misses this season. But the Leeds striker has also netted 10 league goals and is level with Harry Kane in the scoring stakes - so he's clearly doing a good job for his club.

The overall leaders in 'big chances missed', taken from the Premier League website, are below.
