Lewandowski's sensational year makes it all the more bitter there is no Ballon d'Or being awarded this year.
Many believe the 32-year-old was on his way to winning the award prior to France Football scrapping it amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Bleacher Report started a petition to award Lewandowski the award, and he responded with: "I have to say wow and thank you for everything, because I said that to win the Ballon d'Or is for every player to dream [of].
"And I know the numbers what we did and what I did this season, how I played, how we were playing, that was something amazing.
"I think so, in this world, what we are living now is for everyone the same world, and that's why I mean should be staying the same like before.
"I want to say thank you for all the fans who stayed behind me, who want the Ballon d'Or coming back, and coming back in this year maybe, you never know."
Romelu Lukaku and Sergio Aguero make up the rest of the top five, while 20-year-old sensation Erling Haaland places sixth.
Haaland has been nominated for the 2020 Golden Boy award and scored a hat-trick for Norway against Romania on Sunday.
