The Serie A Title Could Be Decided In A Very Unique Way

The Serie A Title Could Be Decided In A Very Unique Way

The Serie A title could be decided by a play-off between first and second place if the league is abandoned due to coronavirus.

Italy's top league was suspended until at least April 3 yesterday and many have wondered what will occur should the league not resume.

A summit between governing bodies on Tuesday revealed that one potential method could be a one-off match between first and second in the table to decide the Scudetto.

A statement from FIGC President Gabriele Gravina per Football Italia stated:

"If the COVID-19 emergency should not allow for the conclusion of the league competitions, President Gravina put forward some proposals that will be discussed in another meeting on March 23.

"Without any order of priority, an option would be not assigning the Scudetto and consequently informing UEFA of the teams qualified for Europe.

"Another would be referring to the table as it stands up until the moment the season was interrupted.

"A third and final hypothesis would be to organise play-offs for the title of Champion of Italy and play-outs to decide relegation into Serie B."

The season has been suspended after 26 games so as it stands it would be a game between Juventus and Lazio to decide the title.

Italian prime minister Giuseppe Conte explained the decision to suspend all sporting activity in the country on Monday.

"There is no more time, the numbers tell us there is a significant increase in the contagion, in intensive care and the deaths," he stated per Goal.

"Our habits have to change, we must sacrifice something for the good of all of Italy. This is why we will adopt even more stringent measures.

"I will sign the new decree, which can be summed up with the phrase 'I am staying at home.' There are no more red zones, there is just an Italy that is protected.

"We must avoid travel unless for proven work reasons, health reasons or other necessities. We ban large public gatherings.

"We also have more stringent measures in mind for sporting events. Serie A and all sporting tournaments in general are suspended. All the fans must accept that."
