Supercomputer Predicts A Surprise Euro 2020 Winner But Semi-Final Heartbreak For England

This Euros have been given a full simulation run-through and the final is not what you'd expect...

A simulation of Euro 2020 has been played out on a supercomputer and the end result is a massive underdog winner but England suffering semi-final heartbreak once again.

England have never got beyond the last-four stage of a major tournament since 1966, exiting in the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup to West Germany, Euro 96 to Germany, and in the 2018 World Cup to Croatia.

So perhaps it's no surprise that Gareth Southgate's side will fall agonisingly short at that stage once again, according to a supercomputer which was fed information by the football experts at Sportrada. But the eventual winner of the tournament is a major shock.

Despite losing to England in the group stage, the Czech Republic will go on to win this summer's Euros, as per the simulation (reported by the Mirror).

Euro tournaments have thrown up surprise winners in the past, including Denmark in 1992 and Greece in 2004. But the Czechs - finalists back in 1996 - triumphing would still be a huge upset.

In Vladimir Coufal and Tomas Soucek, the Czech Republic boast two players who have torn up the Premier League with West Ham this season. So presumably the computer data shows the pair carrying their superb form right into the summer and producing an even greater shock than West Ham's finishing sixth.

The simulation actually has England winning all three of their group games: a cathartic 5-2 victory over Croatia, a tense 1-0 win over Scotland, before a 2-1 triumph over the Czech Republic.

That would leave England apparently playing Group F runners-up France in the last 16 and - here's where we suspect the supercomputer was perhaps overheating a bit - England win that 3-1. Presumably inspired by a returning Harry Maguire producing a heroic defensive masterclass.

After that, England beat Poland 3-2 in a quarter-final thriller, before coming unstuck against a Christian Eriksen-inspired Denmark. Just like at the last World Cup, it seems a potentially winnable-looking semi-final will be England's undoing.

That result will set up a Czech Republic vs Denmark final - which, we have to say, we'll bow in reverence to this supercomputer if it comes off.

The Czechs win 3-2 at Wembley and we all rub our eyes having witnessed a truly remarkable tournament that nobody, apart from one humble computer, truly saw coming.
