Argentinian football fans have joked 'the spirit of Diego Maradona' had a part in River Plate somehow not scoring the winner vs Boca Juniors.

The two South American heavyweights faced off overnight in the Superclasico and were 1-1 in the 89th minute.

Julian Alvarez thought he'd given River a last-gasp winner but his header somehow bounced away from the net.

Boca goalkeeper Esteban Andrada couldn't believe his luck and immediately jumped on the ball after a rebound hit the post.

It genuinely defies physics, how has it not bounced in?

Fans have reacted to the strike and they've all had their say on why it didn't go in, linking it back to Maradona.

The World Cup winner is a legendary figure at Boca, spending two separate stints there.

Maradona tragically died last year at the age of 60 and is adored by supporters.

The home side had taken the lead in the first half through Sebastian Villa's penalty, which came after Nicolas Capaldo was clipped by Paulo Diaz.

Agustín Palavecino managed to score an equaliser in the 66th minute and two minutes later, followed typical scenes in a La Bombonera showdown.

Boca defender Carlos Zambrano received a second yellow card and was sent off.

River's man advantage would only last four ten minutes however as Milton Casco was also given his marching orders 10 minutes later.

A draw leaves River sat sixth in Group A of the Liga Profesional de Fútbol and Boca are fourth in Group B.
