Rio Ferdinand has sent a heartfelt message to Mohamed Salah after the attacker and his side missed out on the Champions League trophy at the last hurdle, with the 25-year-old being substituted off just after the half hour mark because of injury.

Salah was visibly upset at being subbed after a controversial tangle with Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos, and now the former Manchester United defender turned pundit has come out in support of the Egyptian King.

Ferdinand said to BT Sport: "He's become almost a bit more than a footballer.

"He's a symbol for lots of kids around the world and he come from a country that's been crying out for a hero for a long time. He's been that talisman.

"It's just disappointing to see his season end like that after all the stuff he's done this year."

The Manchester-Liverpool derby is one of the fiercest in football, so it's great to see Ferdinand put rivalries aside and come out in support of Salah.

It is reported that the Reds star will be out for three weeks and could even miss Egypt's opening game against Uruguay. Salah has been on fire this season, scoring an unbelievable 44 goals across all competitions for the 2017/18 season, a phenomenal record.

We're all looking forward to seeing Salah come back from injury and shine in Russia for this summer's World Cup.
