Fans have been reacting to a Twitter thread which, rather remarkably, claims that Karim Benzema has been better than Lionel Messi so far this year.
The Real Madrid forward has been in fine touch for club and country of late, but few would dare to argue that his impact has been bigger than that of the diminutive Argentine.
Messi has endured one of his toughest years to date as a professional footballer, having dramatically left Barcelona this summer to link up with countrymen Mauricio Pochettino at PSG.

Prior to that, the 34-year-old did his level best to turn around the fortunes of FC Barcelona, who have struggled massively under Ronald Koeman.
The Catalan Giants did manage to win last season's Copa Del Rey trophy, but in La Liga and Europe, it was a thoroughly underwhelming campaign.
Nevertheless, this hasn't stopped some bold fans from proclaiming that Benzema's 2021 has been better than that of Ballon d'Or contender Messi.

Real Madrid might be without silverware this year, but as the thread highlights, the French forward has certainly done his bit to try and deliver titles for Los Blancos.

However, as you can probably imagine, some Twitter users weren't willing to entertain the idea that Benzema's achievements this year surpassed those of a modern-day great.
"Do g/a before Copa. You're doing 2 months but ignoring 6," one reply read.
Another simply highlighted some of the many flaws in the thread: "Less goals, less assists, less dribbles, less chances created, way less motm, lost pichichi to him by 7 goals, less trophies, euro r16 exit, but alright."
