Saul Niguez has explained 'it never occurred' to him that his 'new club' social media announcement would make fans expect a transfer.

The Atletico Madrid midfielder made an announcement on Sunday that he would be revealing a 'new club' in the coming week.

Many fans anticipated a transfer but Wednesday came around and the 25-year-old announced Club Costa City, an academy project in Elche.

Fans were left feeling misled by the announcement but Saul told AS that he didn't expect to 'create a stir'.

"I am a little alien to social media but my manager was aware and told me that some were misunderstanding it," the Spaniard began.

"It never occurred to me, in the middle of two competitions, La Liga and the Champions League, that people might think that I was going to leave.

"When I put the new club, I put the corporate colours of the new club, a new project which I have been working on for a couple of years that comes from watching children grow up in the academy. I have been working with them for four years.

"Before, I used to see them in the summer, Christmas, Easter... to see them now day-to-day makes me very excited.

"Seeing my work with children reflect on the field makes me proud and the fact that all the people of the club share my values means I am very excited. 'Little by little, I was explaining what it was, so I didn't think it would create such a stir."

The scheme will bring together over 30 teams and more than 500 players of all age groups in the city.

Saul explained on his Instagram page: "The priority of Club Costa City is the comprehensive training of players with the aim of generating healthy habits in them, as well as sports and educational training through the great values that sport brings to society.

"We know how excited you are, and when things are done with this much excitement, they always turn out well."

A transfer away from the Wanda Metropolitano always seemed unlikely.

Saul signed a huge nine year deal back in 2017 with a buy-out clause of over £100 million.
