Orjan Nyland Appears To Carry Ball Over Goal Line - But No Goal Is Given
Aston Villa goalkeeper Orjan Nyland appeared to drag the ball over the goal line against Sheffield United - but goal-line technology ruled no goal.
Oliver Norwood whipped a free-kick into the Villa box which Nyland appeared to have in his grasp.
However, the Norwegian lost his footing and seemed to step over the line and carry the ball into his own net.
Blades players looked to Michael Oliver for the goal signal but play continued with scores still 0-0.
Should Sheffield United be ahead here!?
It looked as if #AVFC 'keeper Ørjan Nyland took the ball over his own line but goal-line technology says no goal! :x: pic.twitter.com/kbSsJajwrF

Fans on social media were quick to react to the incident and it's fair to say the Premier League has delivered controversy in the first game back.
Kind of amazing how goal line technology, a referee, an assistant referee and VAR has all missed that.- Luke Hatfield (@LHatfield_Star) June 17, 2020
Nyland a very, very, very lucky boy #avfc
Well that was a Premier League nugget - surely the first time goal line technology has made an absolute howler. All the players knew, Nyland couldn't have looked more guilty #AVLSHU- richard foster (@rcfoster) June 17, 2020
Well, the technology is not working then, is it? Joke.- Garry Pierrepont (@Weysider) June 17, 2020
Amazing, 100 days without football and we somehow managed to see something game breaking in the first match back #VAR- Sam Kay (@SLK4Y) June 17, 2020

First time I've ever seen goal line technology fail. Clearly over the line.- Andy Leeman (@AndyLeeman91) June 17, 2020

Notice they opted against using the fancy hawkeye goalline graphic for that one.- The Tactical Times (@Tactical_Times) June 17, 2020
How I've missed your madness, Premier League.
The goalline technology was almost certainly not working for the goal that wasn't, it's very weird that hawkeye didn't show its 3d graphic representation of the situation which is pretty damming. Awkward.- Jack (@WorkTheSpace) June 17, 2020
Villa's official Twitter account were also baffled about the situation, while United summed it up in one word.
Really?- Sheffield United (@SheffieldUnited) June 17, 2020
Do you think Nyland carried the ball over the line and should the goal have been given?
