Nine years ago today, Jordan Henderson signed for Liverpool from Sunderland - with the replies to his announcement being horrific in hindsight.

Henderson joined 'The Reds' on this day nine years ago and has gone on to become captain and one of their best players in the modern era.

However, his signing in 2011 didn't thrill many football fans and they were quick to laugh at the transfer on social media.

Some fans commended Liverpool for gambling on the then-youngster but many ridiculed the cost.

One Facebook user commented: "Got booed by his own Sunderland fans last season, says how good he is."

Another also chimed in with: "This sums up everything wrong with our game.

"At least [Andy] Carroll has obvious potential and may well prove the doubters wrong, but Henderson?? I feel sorry for him - the pressure on him to deliver may will destroy him. I hope I am wrong."

While a third stated: "Far too much money, prefer [Jack] Rodwell any day, but then I am biased."

A few comments did praise his signing and one stands out stating: "From a Newcastle fan I think what [Kenny] Dalglish is doing at Liverpool is brilliant, young English talent bodes well for the future."

Many pundits have also tipped the 29-year-old to win PFA Player of the Year thanks to his performances for Jurgen Klopp's side.

Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer is one man who's backed Henderson to earn the nod as best player.

"Jordan Henderson, again [the best of the bunch]. I believe if the season were to end tomorrow he would be my player of the season. Absolutely no doubt about it," the former Newcastle striker said after a 4-0 victory over Southampton in February.

"I think he was magnificent again. The way he drove Liverpool forward. The way he kept everything moving. His attitude. His work rate. Both attacking and defensively starting the move off. Give and go. Can he pass it forward? Yes, he can."

Henderson has played in 25 of Liverpool's 29 Premier League games this season, scoring three and assisting four times.

It's safe to say that Henderson's transfer has worked out despite the outrage among fans when he first arrived.
