But the 26-year-old impressed again as United defeated Manchester City 1-0 last night.

Monaco midfield Fabregas took to social media to praise the Brazilian as 'very good' in recent big games.

Fred has played in every Premier League game since September for 'The Red Devils' and has become reliable in a difficult season.

He's not scored and only notched one assist this season, but his energetic displays have made him a favourite among United fans.

Another influential performance yesterday saw him help United defeat their bitter rivals, but City still progressed to the Carabao Cup Final 3-2 on aggregate.

One thing United fans agree on is that his free-kick quality hasn't matched his performances.

United received a free-kick in a dangerous position last night and he blazed it into the wall.

Fabregas suggested that his former international teammate Juan Mata should have taken the set piece.

Solskjaer was asked about the free-kick in his post-match press conference and admitted the decision had been made in training the previous day.

"Juan is the best one when he feels like it," the Norwegian said per ManUtd.com.

"But they practiced yesterday and Juan told me that Fred was unbelievable in training.

"He scored six or seven on the bounce apparently, and they both felt this was his moment. That was the decision they made there and then. Probably the right decision, but it didn't work out well."

The 46-year-old went on to add: "These boys have come a long way. They've given absolutely everything.

"They've developed - I think, in the first half, even though we didn't create too many clear-cut chances, we pressed them back and had spells where we were attacking and we had spells where they were defending deep, which pleased me."

Yesterday's game ended a whirlwind 24 hours for United in which they confirmed a deal to sign Bruno Fernandes.

United announced they had reached an agreement with Sporting Lisbon for the 25-year-old just hours before kick-off on Wednesday.

There's a chance he makes his United debut on Saturday when they host Wolves in the Premier League.
