This is classic Merson.

So, it's official. We knew it had to happen but, at the same time, none of us really expected it to. Arsene Wenger announced that he will leave will the Gunners after 22 years in charge and so the club will now be accepting applications for the now vacant manager position at the club.

The question now is: who it will be?

Plenty of names have been cast out there already. The bookies have Patrick Vieira, Thomas Tuchel and Joachim Loew as favourites to take up the prestigious role. They're names that would certainly worth consideration, but Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has other ideas.

In classic Merse fashion, the former Gooner midfielder gone left-of-field in his suggestion; it's a name that's undoubtedly polarising among football supporters.

"I like Brendan Rodgers," Merson said on Sky Sports. "I think he ticks all the boxes. He was at Liverpool. People go on 'Well, he had Suarez' but he still had to get a tune out of Suarez when he was there, which he did. And they've never been nearer to winning the league.

"One: he's managed a massive club in Liverpool, now he manages a club that have a cup final every weekend. He has to get those players up for whoever they play - and he plays the exact same way as Arsenal.

Safe to say, Arsenal fans completely and utterly disagreed with Merson on this one, taking to social media to express their views on his bizarre recommendation.

In fairness to Merson, he went on to call Wenger a 'legend'. He even suggested that the club rename the Emirates Stadium to the Arsene Wenger Stadium.

We don't know who will get the job, but what we do know is that they'll have some massive shoes to fill, as the Premier League looks set to say goodbye to one of its greatest ever managers.
