Only One Argentina Player Travelled Home On The Team's Plane

Just what is going on with Argentina?

To put it lightly: Argentina crashed and burned at the World Cup this summer.

Not even Lionel Messi could save the South American side. They initially were pegged as one of the favourites to win the tournament, but a 1-1 draw with Iceland, followed by a hapless and almost embarrassing 3-0 defeat to Croatia saw Argentina lose all composure and eventually crumble.

Indeed the win over Nigeria in the final group stages would have helped matters and given them some hope, but it turned out to be merely a slight on an otherwise devastating and disastrous World Cup campaign.

Luckily, they weren't the only big names to fall out early.

Their final fall came in a Round of 16 clash against France, a contest that finished 4-3 to the Europeans. It was a brilliant game, one of the best of tournament, in fact, but it sadly meant that such players as Messi and Sergio Aguero would no longer be participating in the competition, with their country sent packing early.

And so the side had to jet back from Russia. Well, that was the idea anyway. But, strangely, only one player made the trip on the chartered plane.

According to the Independent sports editor Ed Malyon, only Enzo Perez decided make the trip - with Messi deciding to head off to meet his partner, while the other players dispersed.

Manager Jorge Sampaoli - who had reportedly been stripped of power during the World Cup - decided to hang back with fear of reprisals in Argentina, such is the mess they are in. Jeez.

Will things ever be the same with the side again? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section.
