Mahrez got three votes as captain of the Algeria national team and put Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski - the runaway winner of the award - in first spot.
However his second-place vote went to Liverpool's Sadio Mane, while City playmaker De Bruyne was only third. A strange one when you consider that - even in a tough year for City - De Bruyne won all the major individual player awards for the 2019/20 Premier League season.

"Well this doesn't look good," replied one City fan to the news on Twitter. "Mahrez p**ses me off on a daily basis," claimed another.
"He should've seen how VVD voted and learnt a thing or two," added one football fan.

For the record, Holland captain Virgil van Dijk's votes went to Mane, Mohamed Salah and Thiago Alcantara. Who you may have noticed are all now teammates of his at Liverpool.
Yet the 29-year-old Mahrez was apparently less bothered about reflecting club loyalty in his choices. His votes - among those of many others - actually helped Mane finish as the top Premier League player.
The Senegal star finished in fourth place overall - behind only Lewandowski, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. De Bruyne finished fifth, Salah sixth, while Thiago ended up eighth and Van Dijk 10th.
This is strange. KDB behind Mane? Don't let his 1 good performance all season trick you, he's not been good enough for City. It's time for Mahrez to move on.. https://t.co/FUqOXcw6Rc- Cityboiii (@mcfcfanatiic) December 18, 2020
De Bruyne equalled the Premier League record for assists last season with 20. He was overlooked in the votes by both Messi and Ronaldo - but might have expected his own teammate to at least make him the top Premier League player.
Some praised Mahrez's honesty with one City fan commenting: "I mean it's his vote, his preference, it would be more fair if it had no bias."

Do you think it's right for Mahrez to vote for a Liverpool rival above his fellow City midfielder? Let us know in the comments.
