The general feeling is that Cristiano Ronaldo missed the UEFA award ceremony because he knew he wouldn't win the accolade.

UEFA named a best player in their respective position, and then a single award for the best player overall.

Juventus new man Ronaldo was named Forward of the Year, beating the likes of ahead of Mohamed Salah and Harry Kane.

But the global superstar missed out on the Player of the Year award to Luka Modric - the veteran midfielder who won the Champions League with Real Madrid and helped his nation reached the World Cup final.

Ramos said at the awards about Ronaldo's absence: I do not think Cristiano is unhappy because Modric won the award," said Ramos. "Maybe he is unhappy because he did not win it, but not because a teammate did instead.

"I think if there is one player who deserves this award then it is Luka."

Even still, everyone is branding Ronaldo's decision to miss the awards as disrespectful.

By comparison, when Lionel Messi on the Messi reacted to the 2016 Pichichi to Luis Suarez.

After hearing the news, the Argentina attacker took to Instagram to congratulate his teammate for beating him to the award.

"Congratulations kid! Let's go up," Messi said on social media to Suarez, in a rough translation from Spanish.

This really highlights the difference between Ronaldo and Messi when it comes to being gracious in defeat.
