Lionel Messi Earns Terrible Stat After World Cup Performance

Lionel Messi is usually number one for a good reason. Not this time.

Before you start kicking off, right - we all know that Lionel Messi is the greatest player to ever grace the sport.

It's just that this stat does really highlight how sh*t his campaign in Russia really was. It's not the be all and end all of terrible statistics, but his shot conversion rate wasn't up to scratch in this summer's tournament, and this comes as no surprise, given how terrible Argentina did.

Look at this state of this, Messi. C'mon, man.

This stat was taken over only a four game period, we know - but it was four of the most important games the Argentine player will ever play.

The Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo fanboys have been fighting it out in the comments section, and we still can't work which side comes across the cooler.

But it was this guy ,@onlyCR7matters, who took the most enjoyment out of this stat

It's a good thing we have the online world for fair and balanced discussions about football.

Anyway, before the World Cup, everyone was up for Messi banging in the goals and finally cementing his name as the greatest of all time by winning the thing, surpassing Pele and Diego Maradona as king of the World Cup.

But it wasn't to be. Messi and Argentina greatly missed the mark and poor results cultivated into what would be mini-crisis, with their former boss, Jorge Sampaoli, reportedly stripped of power halfway during the competition.

The South Americans were eventually knocked out in the Round of 16 to France, the eventual winners. It was a gripping game that finished 4-3 and Argentina's defensive frailties against the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann were their undoing.

The next World Cup, Messi will be 34, meaning his prime will likely be behind him. But we fully expect the Barcelona star to come back with vengeance next season, which, by the way, is less than four weeks away. Hooray!
