They must have been watching a different game.

Jadon Sancho made his first start at Euro 2020 on Saturday night - and the general consensus was that the winger played a big part in England's 4-0 quarter-final win over Ukraine.

Not so French publication L'Equipe, who bizarrely gave Manchester United new boy Sancho England's lowest rating for the game with just 4/10.

Selected from the off after an injury to Bukayo Saka, Sancho fully justified his selection.

He was a threat all night in Rome, linking up well with the likes of Raheem Sterling and Luke Shaw when cutting inside.

But he clearly didn't impress L'Equipe, who also handed out 5/10 ratings to Kyle Walker and Kalvin Phillips on a night when England progressed to the semi-final thanks to their biggest-ever win in a knockout game at a major tournament.

Four players earned 6/10, with Harry Maguire and Raheem Sterling given 7/10s.

Two-goal hero Harry Kane and the inspired Luke Shaw - as well as manager Gareth Southgate - all received 8/10.

Perhaps L'Equipe were watching a different game as Sancho, who is joining United in a £73m move from Borussia Dortmund, drew praise from Rio Ferdinand and Frank Lampard after the match in their roles as BBC Sport pundits.

Ferdinand said: "There were moments in this game where he draws your breathe and you think, 'Ooh, wow, that's different!'

"He's a fabulous talent, we know that, but mentally he's very strong. He's got a desire to be as good as he could be and wants to fulfil that potential.

"Players that can up the tempo of a game are different, and they mean something different to your team. They can change a game the way he did tonight.

"One-twos, playing with composure, playing off both feet, end product...

"This is his first game by the way in the tournament and he comes in and plays the way he did and creates moments.

"It shows you the talent that's there."

Lampard added: "I think there's a natural balance and acceleration in him, and movement.

"This is not the norm. We've got a special player coming to the Premier League."
