A detailed Twitter thread has outlined why every footballing legend is a 'fraud' if judged as harshly as Lionel Messi.

The Barcelona superstar is one of football's biggest legends but is criticised for his lack of success with Argentina at international level, in addition to spending his career so far in La Liga.

But football writer Paul Murphy has produced a number of stats that show stars of yester year have faced failure in their career.

He states: "Despite being the greatest of all time, Leo Messi still gets plenty of stick on Twitter for ONLY playing for Barca and never winning World Cup. Got me thinking about how Twitter would have treated some of the greats of the past."

The choice of players range from players in the GOAT conversation like Pele to national heroes such as David Beckham.

A few of the arguments presented include Pele 'retiring in a farmers league' and Beckham being a 'one-trick pony' who owes his career to Sir Alex Ferguson.

Zinedine Zidane is also 'criticised' for his failings in international football, including his red card in the 2006 World Cup final for a headbutt on Marco Materazzi.

Messi has become a figure of scrutiny at Barcelona in recent months and he recently hit out.

Antoine Griezmann's uncle made a number of comments about the 33-year-old this last week and Messi responded by saying: "The truth is that I'm tired of always being the problem of everything at the club."

His Barcelona contract expires next summer.
