The ultimate compilation of Lionel Messi treating football as 'a joke' has been released and it makes for essential viewing.

Some footballers have earned the tag of being geniuses on the ball while remaining lazy when moving around the pitch.

It's not a tag that Messi himself is labelled with but in the latest compilation from MagicalMessi, we see the Barcelona star prove his breathtaking skill at any speed.

Check out the footage below.

The video opens with a quote from Sky Sports' Geoff Shreeves who says: "The thing with Messi is that he always seems to surprise us.

"However good we think he is or how much we heap praise him, we run out of superlatives to describe him."

Various clips of Messi pulling of an outrageous piece of skill then show, with the Argentine deciding to dribble through a whole team or let off a 35 yard screamer.

Commentators gasp at the skill on show with one explaining: "This is the square root of magic," as Messi leaves defenders in the dust.

Another describes him as a 'circus act' in the best way possible.

The comments on the video are also full of praise for the six time Ballon d'Or winner.

One user comments: "He plays football on another level, we all should enjoy this as long as we can."

Another states: "It's not just stat and titles (even though he exceeds most of the footballer in this category). It's the brilliance with which he plays football that makes him the greatest ever."

While a third simply adds: "The most complete footballer ever."

This week marked the anniversary of one of Messi's most iconic moments - when he utterly humiliated one of the world's best defenders in Jerome Boateng.

During the first leg of Barcelona's 2015 semi-final clash with Bayern Munich at the Camp Nou, Messi scored a brace in their 3-0 victory.

However, Messi's second goal left Boateng on his backside after he twisted and turned past the World Cup winner with some brilliant dribbling.

It just proves that Messi do whatever he sets his mind to.
