Gary Neville has become one of Sky Sports' best pundits in recent years - but his debut appearance is still incredibly awkward to watch.

The former Manchester United defender has earned massive praise in recent days for his campaigning against the European Super League.

Neville is known for his expert analysis and is a joy to watch on any matchday - but his first appearance on the show has recently gone viral.

Manchester City ran out 4-0 winners over Swansea City on the first Monday of the 2011/2012 season and Neville stepped up to interview manager Roberto Mancini.

It's fair to say Neville wasn't the finished product having recently retired from playing.

He attempted to break the ice with a quick joke, but instead stumbled over his words live on air.

"Roberto... Gary Neville, I bet I never thought you'd get interviewed by me," he said before letting out a chuckle.

The Italian manager attempted to pick up the joke via video link and the few seconds of silence were cringeworthy.

It's something Neville himself agrees with, having watched the clip back in 2020 with Sky Sport's Patrick Davidson.

He begun: "Oh my god... to this day, the producer that did that show still says 'Hi Roberto'... honestly! I was trying to be too clever."

"Since that point, I feel comfortable with it. That is just embarrassing that. My Bury accent came out and everything!"

It's a huge change from the Neville who passionately battled against a potential ESL.

Some fans have even joked he and broadcast partner Jamie Carragher deserve to be knighted for their efforts.

If that happens - we need to see that Mancini clip aired once again. TV gold.
