Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has given an update on Virgil Van Dijk's knee injury and it's mixed news for Reds fans.

While the German says that Van Dijk is doing well, he also mentioned that the Dutchman's knee didn't 'look how a knee should', and so fans shouldn't get too excited about a shock early return.

"Considering the circumstances, he's doing really well," Klopp told the press on Monday.

"His knee doesn't look good, to be honest. It doesn't look like how a knee should look but with the surgery & he had since but we are in contact. He's doing well."

Van Dijk was injured by a hefty challenge from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford during the Merseyside Derby in October, and was then diagnosed with a ruptured ACL.

It could rule the 29-year-old out for the rest of the season, and injuries to Joe Gomez, Joel Matip, and others have since compounded the injury problems at Anfield.

Klopp hit out at BT on Saturday for scheduling Liverpool to play on a Saturday lunchtime after a mid-week Champions League match, and the high-intensity Reds have found it hard to deal with a packed Covid-affected fixture list.

Despite the injury crisis, Liverpool have largely been able to continue churning out results, although a 1-1 draw with Brighton on Saturday could be the first sign that the squad is straining under the pressure.
