Jamie Carragher endured a bit of a TV nightmare as he let loose an "oh f**k" live on US television, forcing CBS Sports presenter Kate Abdo into an apology.

Carra also got into hot water with some viewers on Tuesday for his apparently condescending attitude towards American footballers, after he made a joke about Barcelona right-back Sergino Dest.

The Liverpool legend's first, literal, f**k-up came when he was in conversation with former England Women's international Alex Scott and managed to get her career facts all wrong.

"In terms of my position though, I played for the club I wanted to play for, didn't want to move and you were the same at Arsenal weren't you?" said one-club man Carragher.

Scott, who spent the majority of her career at the Gunners but also had a brief stint with Birmingham City and three years with Boston Breakers in the US, corrected him. "Well I spent three years in America, went away, played over here in Boston..." she offered.

"Oh f**k!" said Jamie under his breath, before asking, "When did you do that?"

It was a good-humoured exchange and we personally think that maybe Carragher just about got away with a last-ditch defensive manoeuvre (something he specialised in during his career) by hushing up the offending word before it spilled out entirely.

But host Abdo offered an apology later in the broadcast, saying: "I'm afraid a naughty word may have just slipped out there, so we'd just like to apologise."

Carragher's tricky night wasn't over yet, however. He later upset some US viewers with his comments on Barcelona's American 20-year-old full-back Dest.

Asked about the players that Carra likes to watch most, he replied: "You're going on about [Cristiano] Ronaldo and [Lionel] Messi but the player I want to watch every week is Dest!"

Dest scored in Barcelona's 4-0 Champions League win over Dynamo Kyiv, becoming the first American defender to score in the competition.

But naturally a lot of US viewers saw the light-hearted sarcasm in Carragher's comments, putting Dest above Messi and Ronaldo, and perhaps felt it a bit patronising. Cue the social media floodgates opening.

"Jamie, not only have you sworn on air tonight, which is disappointing enough," teased Abdo. "Apparently you've also had Twitter take offence to your comments on American players..."

"I could get my numbers up to [Donald] Trump's level if the US start following me," responded Carragher. Who clearly at this point in the evening, could not give a f**k. Fair play, Jamie.
