Initial Fears Are That Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain Will Miss The World Cup

Hopefully it's not as bad as first thought.

Initial fears are that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will be out for an extended period after the midfielder came off injured in Liverpool's semi-final first leg against AS Roma.

The Reds attacker's knee seemed to give way after an attempted tackle on former Manchester City defender Aleksandar Kolarov in the 15th minute of last night's encounter against the Italian side.

And it poses the potential risk of Oxlade-Chamberlain missing the opportunity to involve himself in England's up-coming World Cup campaign and also see out his season at Anfield.

The 24-year-old has had a sparkling inaugural season with Liverpool and so news of this injury will come to a blow for the side that still has crucial remaining games in their season, including the return tie to AS Roma in the Champions League next Wednesday.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp said after that game. "The biggest blow for the mood is the injury of Chamberlain because we lost a fantastic player," he said.

"I am a very positive person and hope it only feels bad, but all the medical department are quite concerned without a scan."

The extent of the former Arsenal player's injury will not be known until assessments are taken on his knee but seeing Oxlade-Chamberlain taken off in a stretcher last night suggests that initial fears could be true and the player who has so far had a glowing debut campaign could well be out for a substantial period.
