Robert Lewandowski scored his 40th goal of the Bundesliga season, equalling a record set by Gerd Muller 49 years ago - and got a surprise reception from his Bayern Munich teammates and staff.

Lewandowski's penalty opened the scoring against Freiburg and meant he became only the second player ever to hit 40 goals in a Bundesliga season. While there were no fans present to witness the historic moment, Bayern still made it special.

The 32-year-old looked confused after his teammates ran off to the sideline - then touched and faintly embarrassed as he realised they were forming a guard of honour with the coaches, management and substitutes.

The Bayern team applauded as Lewandowski ran through them, high-fiving some teammates.

It was clearly a pre-planned move done without the Polish goal machine's knowledge, as he looked suitably humble in receiving the congratulations of his teammates on an amazing achievement.

Lewandowski then showed what a classy guy he is by revealing a T-shirt in tribute to Muller. What a guy.

Muller, Bayern's record goalscorer and one of the greatest finishers in football history, also hit 40 goals back in 1971/72. But Lewandowski actually reached the 40 mark in six fewer games than Muller, which is a remarkable effort.

With the Bundesliga title already won for Bayern, it would be no surprise to see the team go all out to try and put Lewandowski clear in the lead as the single-season Bundesliga record-holder before the 2020/21 campaign ends.
