Lionel Messi Scores Outrageous Thunderbolt Out Of Nowhere Against PSG

Power. Swerve. Precision.

Lionel Messi produced a spectacular long-range rocket to give Barcelona a foothold in their Champions League second leg against Paris Saint-Germain.

The Argentine picked up the ball a fair distance out with nothing on, darted forwards then absolutely fired a swerving, powerful shot that crashed into the top corner of the net. Keylor Navas had no chance.

It was an amazing display of brute force from a player you usually associate with deft pieces of magic rather than raw power like this.

The equaliser on the night - following Kylian Mbappe's first-half penalty - brought the aggregate score to 5-2 to PSG. However there was time for more drama before half-time - with Messi at the centre again, as he missed from the penalty spot.

Barcelona had had much the better of the first half (Ousmane Dembele missing several good chances) and the visitors had a glorious opportunity to take a 2-1 lead on the night just before the break.

Antoine Griezmann was caught in the box by Layvin Kurzawa, who was trying to clear the ball, and the referee pointed to the spot.

Messi stepped up to take the penalty, but it was - unlike his 25-yard shot - a tame effort. Navas stopped it with his legs and the ball bounced up on to the crossbar and away.

Barca's No 10 had scored an incredible goal and then missed from the spot in the space of a few minutes. It means Barcelona have to score three in the second half to take the tie to extra time.
