Footballer Writer's Controversial Tweet Sparks Debate About Zinedine Zidane

So just how good was Zinedine Zidane?

Football is subjective. Not everyone will agree on everything, but there are certain notions that are widely accepted: Brazil are the best international team, for example, while Latin America clubs are considered to have the best supporters. Another one is, Zinedine Zidane is one of the greatest players to ever grace the sport.

Are we all agreed on that?

Actually, not quite. Sports writer and renowned author Micheal Cox has questioned whether Zidane's career was actually as good as most people say it was.

In a tweet, he said: From 10 years in Serie A and La Liga, the number of consistently good seasons Zinedine Zidane had is 2 at the most, and quite possibly 0.

In following replies and tweets, a debate ensues, with other interesting opinions surfacing, such as the point of Roberto Carlos, in fact, being a very average player who couldn't take free-kicks very well, even using the strong wind in that famous dead-ball strike against France to his advantage.

Cox knows his stuff and has written a best-selling book about tactics. Though most might take issue with his statement, it does draw attention to the fact that history can exaggerate our perception of players. Those who are now not playing the sport tend to be seen through rose-tinted glasses, when instead we should be questioning our sources and building opinions based on our own experiences, and not other's.

Do you agree with Cox's assessment of Zidane? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section.
