Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has shown the nasty extent of the scaring on his left knee, after he had surgery to repair his tendon in November.

The centre-back picked up the injury while training with England and it was serious enough to mean there's no guarantees he'll play again in the 2020/21 season.

Football fans have been reacting on Twitter to the images of Gomez's knee after he was pictured in the gym, stepping up his recovery from his operation.

Naturally there was a lot of sympathy from fans - no matter which club they support - at the state of the large scar on the 23-year-old's knee and the lengths he will need to go to to be ready to play competitive football again.

Jurgen Klopp's champions have been beset with defensive injuries this season. Virgil van Dijk picked up a serious ACL injury against Everton after Jordan Pickford's challenge, which made Gomez even more important to Liverpool.

But within three weeks of losing Van Dijk, possibly for the season, Klopp got news from the England camp that the Dutchman's partner Gomez had also suffered a serious long-term injury.

Gomez's knee reportedly gave way with no involvement from any of his England teammates. He quickly underwent surgery to repair the tendon and is now engaged in a rehabilitation programme at his club's AXA Training Centre in Kirkby.

At least the player himself looks to be completely dedicating himself to the recovery process and doing everything he can to strengthen the joint.

Though of course Gomez will need to show a lot of patience and mental resilience, as the Premier League and Champions League winner rebuilds from what was clearly a fairly horrific injury.
