Dimitri Payet has reportedly been offered the chance to return to West Ham after just 18 months away,

The Frenchman was one of the standout performers for the Hammers under former boss Slaven Bilić but in January of 2017 reports started to surface that the attacker wanted to leave the club and head back to Marseille.

A £25 million pound bid for him by his former side was accepted by the Irons and he returned to Ligue 1.

The manner in which Payet left West Ham deeply hurt supporters. After his departure, a mural of the player at the London Stadium was replaced by one of Andy Carroll, and videos emerged online of fans putting a replica of his jersey on the ground before treading and jumping on it.

But now - in what will be one of the most talked about transfer rumours of the summer, perhaps even more so than the recent Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus reports - the 31-year-old is linked with a move back to the London side.

Fans don't know which way to turn. They want their star man back but haven't forgotten the pain and anguish he gave them earlier last year.

Payet scored ten goals for Marseille last season but an injury in the UEFA Europa League final saw him miss a chance of flying out to Russia in the France squad for the World Cup.
