Diego Costa has jokingly called teammate Luis Suarez a "b*stard" after the Uruguayan scored twice against Elche on Saturday.

The 33-year-old Suarez had been criticised for his performances recently, especially in Atletico Madrid's 2-0 defeat to Real Madrid last week.

Manager Diego Simeone even had to come out to take some of the pressure off the former Barcelona ace, claiming that the lull in form was due to him and not the striker, as the Atletico boss had rushed him back after Suarez had suffered from COVID-19.

"The person most responsible is me more than him," he said. "Just out of COVID we played him, without giving him time [to get up to speed], but he is going to be very important for us."

However, Simeone won't have to continue covering for Suarez now, with the striker netting a brace to come back into form in the 3-1 La Liga win.

Costa, who had just returned from deep vein thrombosis that had kept him out since November, also scored from the penalty spot after a dodgy dive.

The ex-Chelsea forward will have been hoping to get some game time with his teammate out of form, but may now have to wait - and joked to reporters that Suarez was a "cabron" (b*stard) for his brace.

"He wasn't scoring, the b*stard... now I'm back and he scores twice," Costa said, before adding that he was very happy for the Uruguayan.
