Cristiano Ronaldo has left a touching message to his former manager Zinedine Zidane after the boss announced he was leaving Real Madrid.

Zidane held a press conference and shocked the football world by announcing that he will be stepping down as manager of the La Liga giants after just three years in charge.

It was an unexpected move, but many Real Madrid players have come out to say they're sorry to see the former Juventus and Bordeaux player leave the club.

Ronaldo often gets criticised for being too self-involved and egotistical, but not here, the Portugal international taking to social media to say his goodbyes.

In an Instagram post, Ronaldo said: "I'm just proud of being your player. Mister, thanks for so much."

It's been reported that the pair had a fraught relationship during their time together in Madrid.

After Real Madrid won the Champions League the third consecutive time, Ronaldo used the opportunity to make the night all about himself amid rumours of his departure from Los Blancos, saying that he was unsure about what the future holds for him.

When asked whether Ronaldo played a part in his decision to leave the club, Zizou adamantly denied it:

"No, not at all.

"I had the respect of all, above all the players, which has been fundamental in achieving things.

"The players have nothing to do with my decision, it is about what I think."

It's nice to see Ronaldo showing his respect to a legend of the game - but obviously we're not privy to what went on behind closed doors.

Another player who Zidane did not reportedly get on with is Gareth Bale. Zidane played the Welshman sparingly and Bale said after the Champions League final that he would look elsewhere in the summer for more game time. News of Zidane's departure, however, might change all that.
