Pat Nevin has recalled the time he nearly killed Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich in a bizarre cycling incident.

The Chelsea legend has recalled when he came close to running over the billionaire on a drive around the island of Arran.

Abramovich and Nevin have met in the past, but the Russian did not recognise him in the incident.

The 56-year-old also confessed to BBC Radio Scotland that he never admitted it was him.

"About three years ago I was on holiday in Arran and I was driving up the north side of Arran. Every time you go on holiday there you drive round the whole island.

"I came round a corner at the top just before Lochranza and I nearly hit a guy on a bike. I just got out the way at the last moment, I could have killed the guy. It was Roman Abramovich.

"What a story that would have been if I had killed Roman Abramovich. I just missed him.

"His yacht was off the coast and he was cycling round.

"He doesn't know to this day that it was me."

Nevin, who made nearly 200 appearances for Chelsea in the 1980's, likely wouldn't have kept his legend tag if he did collide with the 53-year-old.

Abramovich used to be a common figure at Stamford Bridge but hasn't been seen in the UK since 2018.

The UK government failed to renew his visa in the spring of that year and he's avoided the country ever since.

He was pictured at last year's Europa League final in Baku to see his side defeat Arsenal 4-1.

Nevin went on to discuss Abramovich's presence being similar to that of royalty.

But he also revealed that the oligarch is incredibly shy.

"I have met him quite a few times. He is phenomenally shy, he is an incredibly shy person," Nevin said.

"I was down DJing in London about two years ago. I was sitting in a sports place at the back of Stamford Bridge and he caught my eye.

People come over to him, he never walks over to them, it's a bit like royalty.

"But I was sitting talking to this wee guy who is a DJ, a scruffy wee indie kid, and Roman starts walking right behind him towards me.

"I said 'hi' and shook his hand and the kid got the fright of his life. He nearly jumped out his skin."
