Barcelona Taunt Juventus Over ‘GOAT’ Lionel Messi Being Ready To Play
Barcelona have fired a warning at Juventus on Twitter that they will be facing the 'GOAT' Lionel Messi in tonight's Champions League tie.
The jibe is double-edged as it clearly relates to Messi but there's arguably a silent dig at Cristiano Ronaldo, the Juve superstar who won't be able to play in Wednesday's match after testing positive for coronavirus (although the 35-year-old is thankfully showing no symptoms).
"Hey, Juventus, we're looking forward to seeing the GOAT on your pitch tomorrow night!" came the tweet from Barca's account the day before the match.
Thankfully, Juventus responded in the same playful fashion with which Barcelona's initial message was intended.
"We prefer seeing this wonderful, left-footed Argentine," shot back Juve's social media admin, alongside footage of Paulo Dybala curling in a wonderful shot against the Catalan giants.
This set the tone for a light-hearted exchange between the two clubs. Barca responded with videos of goals against Juve via Messi, as well as departed stars Neymar and Ivan Rakitic. The Serie A champions shot back with a thumping Giorgio Chiellini header, scored against (you guessed it) Barcelona.

Randomly, both took the opportunity to show off pics of their stadiums (very nice), while Barcelona finished off with a flashback to Andres Iniesta's magical footwork in the midfielder's prime.
So Barcelona may have got the first and last word, although some fans might point out that having to dip back into the archives for Neymar, Rakitic and Iniesta shows that the Liga club are not quite the force they used to be. Particularly in 2015, when Barcelona last won the Champions League, beating Juventus 3-1 in the final, but with a far stronger side than they boast now.
These memories of classic recent clashes between the pair certainly built anticipation for the showdown to come. Although it's inevitably bitterly disappointing to football fans that Ronaldo and Messi won't be sharing a pitch in this first group game in Turin, at least.
Here's hoping that CR7 is fully fit for the return match in December, so we can finally see these two GOATs chewing up the same grass together one more time.
