Paris Saint-Germain star Angel Di Maria has been accused of spitting at Marseille defender Alvaro Gonzalez during Sunday's controversial clash.

Marseille emerged 1-0 winners from 'Le Classique' but the game was overshadowed by an unsavoury incident at full-time.

Five players were sent off after a wild brawl with PSG trio Neymar, Leandro Paredes and Layvin Kurzawa receiving their marching orders as well as Marseille duo Jordan Amavi and Dario Benedetto.

Neymar claims Alvaro made a racist remark towards the end of the game - but the Spaniard insists Di Maria spat at him in the first-half.

Television cameras look to have picked up the moment Di Maria potentially spat at his opponent.

Marseille manager Andre Villas-Boas discussed the Argentine spitting at his player after the game, but condemned any racist behaviour.

"I don't know. I hope not, there is no place for racism in football," the Portuguese boss told Telefoot per Goal.

"It's a serious fault if it happened but I don't think so. Before that, we had a situation with a spit from Di Maria.

"These are things to avoid in the world of football. I hope it won't be a black spot in this historic performance."

Di Maria was playing in his first game since recovering from COVID-19, which has rocked the footballl world the core.

Florian Thauvin scored the game's only goal to seal victory for Marseille.

"Yes it's an important and historic victory, it's a tough and difficult victory as always," Villas-Boas added.

"It's a great victory. We improved little by little with a little more control. We were disciplined defensively. It should finish 2-0, but I don't know why the referee didn't give the second goal.

"Di Maria and Neymar were incredible. I congratulate them because it's hard after COVID-19 to present yourself like this. They did well and fought for 90 minutes. It was the moment for us. We were confident."
