AC Milan have been banned from competing in European football for two years as punishment for breaking financial fair play rules.

UEFA have banned the Italian side from playing in the Europa League next season, despite them qualifying.

Last summer, Milan underwent a major squad overhaul, with the hope to bring back their dominance. They finished 6th place in Serie A, were runners-up in Coppa Italia, and reached round of 16 in the Europa League.

News of this ban will certainly dampen Milan spirits.

But it's not unexpected. Reports have flooded out for some time that Milan could be punished. So much so that AC Milan released this strange video via their social media page, defending themselves.

But just two days later, news of their ban was announced.

UEFA official statement reads, "The Adjudicatory Chamber of the Club Financial Control Body has taken a decision in the case of the club AC Milan for the breach of the UEFA Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play Regulations, in particular the break-even requirement.

The club is excluded from participating in the next UEFA club competition for which it would otherwise qualify in the next two (2) seasons (i.e. one competition in 2018/19 or 2019/20, subject to qualification).

This decision may be appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The full reasoned decision will be published in due course."
