Newcastle United's new Saudi owners are reportedly interested in acquiring Italian giants Inter Milan too.

That's according to Calciomercato.com, as quoted by Football Italia, who claim that the Public Investment Fund want to take over the Serie A champions and restore them to former glories after a summer which saw some of their best players depart.

However, the PIF will only commit to a takeover if the plans for a new stadium, built next to the current San Siro, go ahead.

Calciomercato.com understands that Inter are trying to rush through the deal following the re-election of the Mayor of Milan Giuseppe Sala. Whilst financial difficulties remain an obstacle, their report suggests that the 3-time European Cup winners will do all in their power to get the Saudis involved in Serie A.

Their takeover of Newcastle United has sent shockwaves throughout the country this evening. Announced just after 5pm, it brings an end to the dismal reign of Mike Ashley, who had owned the club for 14 years. In that time, The Toon were relegated twice and had the likes of Joe Kinnear, Alan Pardew and Steve McClaren patrolling the touchline.

"This is a long-term investment," says Amanda Staveley, Chief Executive Officer of PCP Capital Partners, who have pushed for the takeover to be completed since it was initially rejected by the Premier League two years ago. "We are excited about the future prospects for Newcastle United.

"We intend to instill a united philosophy across the Club, establish a clear purpose, and help provide leadership that will allow Newcastle United to go on to big achievements over the long term.

"Our ambition is aligned with the fans - to create a consistently successful team that's regularly competing for major trophies and generates pride across the globe."

Fans were pictured celebrating outside St James' Park when the news broke, with several famous Geordies taking to Twitter to express their delight.

"Oh what a beautiful day," showbiz stars Ant and Dec remarked.

"Yesssssssss," Alan Shearer said. "We can dare to hope again."

"Takeover complete," former cult hero Rob Lee commented with a smattering of beer and wine emojis.

Will we see similar scenes in Milan in a few weeks' time? It looks likely...
