Liverpool pay homage to a great man and a great manager.

It's normally the biggest rivals that end up showing the greatest respect for each other.

Liverpool and Manchester United are no different. The two biggest clubs in England, possibly in the world, are sat a mere 32 miles apart. Both don red, both are proud of their working-class heritage. One has 41 major trophies, the other, 42 major trophies. If opposites attract, then similarity repels. The fractious relationship between two clubs in the two cities which are largely the same is spurred on by the unprecedented success of each.

Not only this, but eras and power shifts catalyse enmity. The 1980s: the Red Machine of Liverpool, who won 14 major trophies in that time, reached a climax of their dominance about the same time Alexander Chapman Ferguson moved down from the Granite City to the west side of Manchester, to the stadium which sits on what was the biggest industrial estate in the world. To an area built on labour and sweat and frothy pints and Saturday afternoons watching Newton Heath through chilled smoggy air.

It's no wonder why, despite the man who unplugged Liverpool's power surge and kept it incapacitated for about 25 years, has been revered by the same gorup. The Reds recognise greatness. They know and have lived it.

That's why it's so apt for Liverpool to be one of the clubs to lead the tributes of the poorly-taken former boss.

Liverpool's official website said.

"The thoughts of everyone at Liverpool Football Club are with Sir Alex Ferguson and his family following the news that the former Manchester United manager is ill in hospital.

"A great rival but also a great friend who supported this club during its most difficult time, it is hoped that Sir Alex will make a full recovery.

"In the meantime, the club will offer its full support to Manchester United and also his family."

Everyone is thinking of you, Sir Alex. Even your greatest foes.
